EL PASO, TEXAS — A forward-thinking grant funded by the Verizon Innovative Learning Schools and directed by Digital Promise will begin delivering iPads to all students and teachers at five EPISD middle schools starting this week.
The rollout of iPads aims to make teachers and students adept problem-solvers, content creators and responsible consumers of media in a national effort to close the digital learning divide in schools serving low-income students.
The iPads will help students complete their academic coursework, and will supplement the lessons teachers use in the classroom to create high-quality teaching and learning. Students and teachers will be allowed to take the tablets home during the school year.
Nearly 4,000 iPads will be distributed in the next three weeks. The first roll out will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 16, at Morehead Middle School, 5625 Confetti Dr.
The other four schools participating are Armendariz, Bassett, Charles and Henderson middle schools.
“This is the third year of the grant and EPISD is the largest single grant recipient of any district in the U.S.,” said Tim Holt, EPISD’s Executive Director of Blended Learning. “Our commitment as part of this grant is to take these five schools and start transforming how the teachers and students do lessons.”
Tablets come equipped with a 2-year data plan to ensure students have Internet access at home.
Students and teachers will be on hand on Friday to demonstrate how the iPads will impact teaching and learning at participating schools.

Certified Campuses
In the 2015-16 school year, the El Paso Independent School District earned the distinction of becoming a certified digital citizenship district as determined by Common Sense Education. The campuses listed below are certified digital citizenship schools. Each year we will recognize the schools who continue to achieve certified status by adding a star next to their names. This effort is in keeping with our district's dedication to teaching young people how to become responsible digital citizens who can effectively and safely use the resources of the Internet for communication, collaboration, research, and social networking.
