Yellow in color, 5 sepals 3-5 mm long, and 5 petals 4-6.5 mm long. An achene, 6-8 mm long, 4-5 mm wide, covered with up to 3 mm long spines. The distinctive buttercup flowers and spatulate basal leaves with linear stem leaves are all characteristics that help to distinguish corn buttercup from most other similar weeds.
- Corn buttercup leaves are stalked and deeply dissected, divided into 3-5 lobes. Formerly widespread throughout the south and east of England but has declined rapidly over the last 60 years, now with few viable populations. A strong-hold remains in the south-west Midlands, with other sites scattered from Devon to Suffolk.
- Corn Buttercup is an annual herb, flowering from May to mid-June. Its seeds mature by the end of June, and germinate during autumn and winter. The seed dormancy for Corn Buttercup is thought to be short-lived, at less than five years, but could last longer when seeds are deeply buried. Habitat An arable species, typically found in winter-sown crops.

Corn buttercup is a cornfield annual which grows to about 50cm high and has deeply cut stem leaves and relatively small lemon yellow flowers. The most characteristic feature of this plant are the large, prickly achenes (seeds) quite unlike those of any other buttercup found on the British mainland (Ranunculus muricatus found on the Isles of Scilly are similar but its leaves are not deeply divided). Flowers from early May to late June.

Habitat Information
Corn buttercup was originally introduced into Britain at least as far back as Roman times. It was formerly widespread and locally common but has declined rapidly since the introduction of modern broad-spread herbicides. Corn buttercup is almost entirely restricted to arable land and is found on loamy, sandy, chalky and, most particularly, heavy clay soils.
